Primary HDD Symptoms

What are some of the symptoms you may have observed before your HDD went down?

My HDD... made UNUSUAL NOISES. (Please avoid running this drive!) has a BURNT ODOR. needs to be checked for SPIN-UP. recieved a PHYSICAL SHOCK. recieved other MAJOR DAMAGE. I don't know? Looking for SSDs?
